A guide to outdoor activities during Covid-19

Getting out while maintaining your distance.

I have been keeping myself sane by getting out of the house as much as possible during the shutdown. While I’ve been out, I have discovered some cool places in town that I hadn’t really spent much time in before as well as which activities and places seem to be the easiest to practice distancing in.

I hope this list helps you to get out and get some fresh air. It’s really lovely out right now as the magnolias are blooming, the tulips are up and life is emerging all around us!

Remember to practice social distancing while out and about and to be mindful of others on the trail.

There are a few who maybe haven't heard there's a pandemic right now, so be proactive.

  • Hiking-

Spokane has many beautiful trails and neighborhoods to explore. Go someplace new and get to know your city.

I step way off the trail anytime someone is coming towards me to give plenty of space for them to pass. This has generally worked well and is easy to do. I have found it to be somewhat challenging when on a single-track trail on a hillside. For example, The Bluff here on the South Hill can be tricky in some places.

I love the All Trails app for finding new places in the area.

Some trails I’ve enjoyed that are easy to distance on:

    • Antoine Peak

    • James T Slavin Conservation Area Loop

    • Glenrose Cliff Trail

    • The Bluff closer to Polly Judd Park is open and easy to distance.

  • Biking

Biking is great because, you can cover so much ground in such a short period of time, and people are unlikely to get close to you. I love biking through neighborhoods and seeing homes, landscapes, and areas I wouldn’t normally see. The Centennial trail is also great and wide and easy to distance on, (it may be technically closed though).

The only place I found problematic on a bike was on the bluff trails near 29th. Walkers who were unaware didn’t step aside and I was unable to lift my bike up the side of the hill to get away from them. It was a brief encounter but too close for my liking.

I’ll be sticking to wider paths and streets.

All Trails is also great for finding bike options.

  • Chillin

Sometimes you just want to do nothing. I’ve had lots of that. It’s great to do nothing in my own back yard, but sometimes getting out and people watching from a distance is a nice reminder that the world is still turning.

Parks are busy right now, but once you find a spot to chill, people seem to keep their distance.

    • Grab a camp chair and head to the park.

    • bust out your hammock and nap or read a book under the trees

    • Listen to the birds and the wind and watch some clouds go by

and SOON….

  • Paddle Boarding!

I can’t wait for this easy social distancing activity!

I hope you get to go out and explore and feel safe at the same time.

I can’t wait to see you back at THE SPACE soon!
